A new study, the 2018 Cloud Adoption Report by Bitglass, has examined the cloud applications used in more than 135,000 organisations around the globe. The report corroborates what is now apparent in business – leveraging cloud apps has become a standard practice that provides organisations with improved flexibility, efficiency, collaboration, and cost savings. This trend is particularly evident among leading cloud productivity suites. While G Suite adoption remained steady at 25% since Bitglass last measured global cloud adoption, Office 365 exhibited a significant spike in usage, increasing from 34% in 2016 to more than 56% today.

In addition to tracking adoption metrics for the world’s leading cloud productivity platforms, the report reveals adoption rates for a host of different cloud-based tools, including Slack, Box, and Salesforce. The Bitglass research team also uncovered information about how often organisations are turning to AWS for infrastructure as a service (IaaS), as well as how often basic security measures like single sign-on (SSO) are used alongside cloud applications.

“It comes as no surprise that cloud adoption keeps achieving all-time highs year after year. Organisations worldwide have come to trust platforms like Office 365 and AWS as vendors continue to bolster security and feature-sets,” said Rich Campagna, CMO, Bitglass. “Competition between major public cloud players such as Amazon, Google, and Microsoft will only increase as they fight to grow market share. It remains to be seen which emerging apps will join them to become staples in the enterprise.”

Key Findings:

  • The analysis of more than 135,000 organisations indicates that global cloud adoption has topped 81 percent – a 37% increase since 2016 and a 238% increase since 2014 when Bitglass produced its first Cloud Adoption Report.
  • Office 365 usage surpassed G Suite usage in 2016 and has proceeded to stretch its lead since then. Currently, Microsoft’s offering boasts more than twice as many deployments as Google’s. While G Suite usage has remained steady around 25% over the last year, Office 365 usage has grown from 34.3% to 56.3%.
  • A quarter of organisations now use SSO solutions to authenticate their users. In terms of organizsation size, large enterprises use SSO more than two times as often as small businesses (44.1% compared to 17.9%). By industry, education is the leading adopter of SSO at 40.3%, while retail (15.9%) has one of the lowest SSO adoption rates.
  • Amazon Web Services (AWS) has emerged as the go-to infrastructure as a service (IaaS) solution. 13.8% of companies worldwide are using AWS with the technology industry leading the way at 21.5% adoption.
